Firmware Update Procedure Gefen EXT-DSC v2.2.6

Gefen periodically publishes new firmware versions for the Digital Signage Creator. These new versions are free to all customers and will improve the performance and reliability of your Digital Signage Creator. We recommend that you always update your Digital Signage Creator to the latest firmware as soon as it becomes available. The latest firmware information is available in the Release notes page.

Before changing any firmware, always make a Backup of your device settings.

Power outages and other events may cause the Digital Signage Creator firmware to become corrupted. See the "Firmware Update" section for instructions on reinstalling the Digital Signage Creator firmware.

Firmware Update

The incremental update ("upgrade") from the Gefen update server is the most common way to upgrade your firmware.  To perform the update procedure, the Digital Signage Creator must be connected to the Internet.

The EXT-DSC content and settings are preserved on the device.

It is not possible to choose which firmware version to install.  If the firmware from the specified source path is newer than the existing one, then you can update your Digital Signage Creator firmware.

To check if a new version of the firmware is available for your Digital Signage Creator, follow the steps below:

If the Digital Signage Creator is not connected to the Internet, refer to the "Alternative Firmware update methods" section.

  1. Open the WEB Configuration Interface and click on "Firmware Update" under the Administration menu on the left.
  2. Go to the Settings tab and check that the "Server URI" is set to:

  3. Go back to the Settings tab, select the update source "From server" and click the "Check for Update" button.
  4. A progress bar will be displayed, indicating that the Digital Signage Creator is checking for firmware updates. After the Digital Signage Creator completes this process, one of the following messages will be displayed:
  • X updates available
  • Updating now would install firmware version 2.2.x (build 0.x.xxxxx)
  • No updates available.
  • Update failed: see the Troubleshooting section for more details.
  • Fatal Error: If the update process reports a fatal error, please contact Gefen support to find how to restore the firmware of your Digital Signage Creator.

Updates Available

Firmware available for update

  1. Click the "Update Now" button to proceed with the firmware update.
  2. Make sure that the Digital Signage Creator is not powered off during the update procedure.
  3. During the upgrade, each library is downloaded, uncompressed, verified for integrity and then installed. The Digital Signage Creator will automatically reboot after the update process has completed.
  4. You can monitor the update process by clicking "Show update log" during the upgrade process.

Upgrading via the WEB Configuration Interface can take a while depending on many factors:

  • Internet connection speed
  • Content playing on the device (restore default content will speed up the process)
  • Upgrade difference (the greater the difference between firmware versions, the longer the update process will take)

A full reinstall via the Recovery Console is a much faster way to change firmware, but will reset all the settings and the content.

Update failed - the most probable source of this error is that your Digital Signage Creator couldn't contact the update server. Check your Internet connection and that your network setup is correct.
Error messages concerning firmware:

  • "failed parsing repository URI"
    * The updates website is temporarily unavailable or a proxy server / ISP warning page is being returned instead of the Gefen site page. Check the Server URI in a browser on a PC running the same network configuration.
  • "failed retrieving repository path 'repodata/repomd.xml' (could not connect to server)"
    * The Digital Signage Creator is unable to connect to the Internet. Fix the connection issue and try again.
  • "failed fetching 'repodata/repomd.xml' (404 Not Found)"
    * The update server name is most likely misspelled. Reset to the default Gefen server and try again.
  • failed fetching '[filename].rpm' (400 Bad Request)"
    * This can happen when using a proxy to connect to the Internet. The download of the repomd.xml was successful, but the *.rpm files are blocked by the proxy. Contact your network administrator or use an alternative firmware update method.

Alternative Firmware update methods

If you are still unable to upgrade the firmware via the Internet, try one of the following solutions:

  1. Incremental update ("upgrade") from a local web server or from an USB flash drive.
            a. For saving bandwidth, providing network security, or other reasons, you may prefer to update multiple players via your local web server        or an USB flash drive.
            b. Uses the same process as above, except that the repository is not located on the default server (the Gefen web server), but on your local         server / USB flash drive.
  2. Revert to the factory default firmware.
            a. The firmware installed at the factory is permanently stored on the Digital Signage Creator.  You can use Recovery mode to revert to the
               factory firmware.
            b. The device will be restored to the same state as when it left the factory which means that the Digital Signage Creator may not be running
the most current version of firmware. Therefore, you will need to update to / install the latest firmware after restoring the
               Digital Signage Creator.
  3. Install the firmware from Recovery Console
            a. Can only be done in Recovery mode
            b. Requires a PKG file which is provided by Gefen. The PKG file is not part of the repository used for Incremental updates.
            c. Should be used only when down-grading or in cases where the factory firmware has been corrupted.
            d. Intermediate firmware versions (i.e. since the factory firmware but prior to the current firmware) can be obtained by contacting
               Gefen support.
            e. Only the most recent firmware release is supported. Gefen Technical Support will request that you upgrade to the most recent firmware
if you are using an older version.

Updating from your local server

NOTE: There is a known incompatibility when updating firmware hosted with IIS 7. IIS does not allow certain characters in file names, some of which are included in the paths of the update files. This is an IIS limitation.

  1. Download the following file here:
  2. Unzip the contents of the .zip file to a folder on your local HTTP server (e.g. ~/public_html/EXT-DSC/).
  3. Open The WEB Configuration Interface on the device and go to Firmware Update.
  4. Go to the Settings tab and set the Server URI to the address of your server (e.g. http://myupdateserver/EXT-DSC/updates/).
  5. Click the "Apply" button.
  6. Go back to the Firmware tab, select the update source "From server" and click the "Check for Update" button.
  7. A list of available updates will be displayed.
  8. Select Update to begin the update process or select Cancel.

Installing firmware from the recovery console

  1. Download the following file:
  2. Unzip the contents of the .zip file to a USB flash drive and insert it into your Digital Signage Creator.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the USB device to be recognized.
  4. Open The WEB Configuration Interface on the device and go to Firmware Update.
  5. Change the "Update source" to "USB Key" and click the "Check for Update" button.
  6. A list of available updates will be displayed.
  7. Select Update to begin the update process or select Cancel.

Updating from a USB flash drive

  • Unlike the "upgrade firmware" facility via the WEB Configuration Interface, installing firmware via the Recovery console will erase any existing firmware and install the new firmware from scratch. All your content will be erased and you will need to re-publish your project.
  • This procedure is necessary should the firmware become corrupted.
  • If you need the Digital Signage Creator to use a specific IP address after the firmware has been reinstalled from the recovery console, follow the procedure below:
            * Do not reboot the Digital Signage Creator at the end of the installation process
            * Open the Diagnostic page
            * Go to the Change Configuration section, at the bottom of the page
            * Set the IP configuration and click the Set change button
            * Reboot the device

Reverting to factory firmware

  • Boot into Recovery mode.
  • Click the "Install Factory Image" button.

If the factory firmware is not available, use the installation procedure based on PKG files.

To restore the factory defaults without reinstalling the firmware, see the Reset to factory default settings page.

Installing a specific Firmware

The EXT-DSC firmware versions are available as a full package (PKG format) here:
Please contact Gefen support for credentials.

  1. Boot into Recovery mode.
  2. On the first page of the recovery console, next to the "Firmware image package:" field, click the "Browse" button.
  3. Select the PKG file downloaded from the Gefen site.
  4. Click the "Upload and install this image" button.
  5. Wait for the installation process to complete, then reboot into normal mode.

Error messages concerning firmware

"tar: gzip: Cannot write: Broken pipe"

  • The PKG file is corrupted. Download the file again after clearing your browser's cache.

"Could not recover firmware image package file"

  • If you receive this error when trying to update from a PKG file, then you should attempt to install the factory firmware using the instructions elsewhere on this page. If you receive this error when installing the factory firmware, then your Digital Signage Creator is not user-recoverable and must be returned to Gefen for support.

Corrupted firmware

  • Corrupted firmware is usually indicated by frequent reboots or other erratic behavior.  If you suspect your Digital Signage Creator has corrupted firmware, then the firmware must be reinstalled via the Recovery console (see The WEB Configuration Interface for instructions).
  • If you cannot reach The WEB Configuration Interface because you receive an Internal Server Error, then follow the procedure described under Push button to force the device to boot in Recovery mode.  Complete the procedure by following the "Installing firmware from the recovery console" procedure.
